Abans de començar una sessió d’estudi hem de poder respondre “Perquè estem estudiant això?”. Si no fem això, el nostre cervell no estarà disposat a col·laborar tant com voldríem. La millor manera de respondre aquesta pregunta és planejant què farem en la sessió d’estudi i perquè ho farem. Has de ser tant detallat com sigui possible ja que l’ambigüitat obre la porta a la inactivitat.

Suposem que hem d’estudiar unes frases que després farem servir per practicar la pronunciació.

Un exemple de com NO respondre a “Perquè estem estudiant això?” seria la següent: “Necessito estudia aquestes frases.”. Com podem veure aquesta resposta és molt ambigua. No saps ni perquè ho fas ni saps per on començar.

En canvi un bon exemple seria el següent (extret directament del llibre):

“I need to study my sentences because they will help me to understand grammar more effectively. Plus, when I finish studying them, I can use these sentences with my language shadowing studies which will allow me to practice Japanese speaking and listening.

In order to study these sentences, I have to break them down into items I know and don’t know.

First, I’ll need to identify and list all the vocabulary words. Then, I’ll pull any kanji I don’t know out from the vocabulary. I’ll break these kanji up into their individual radicals, then look up the meaning of the kanji on Jisho. Once I’ve done that, I can use the radicals to create a mnemonic to remember the meaning as well. Any new kanji will be added to my SRS.

When I’ve learned all the kanji I’ll learn the vocab words that use the kanji. Since I know the kanji, the vocabulary should make a lot more sense and be easier to remember.

Once I’ve learned all the vocabulary, I will practice saying each sentence out loud until I feel comfortable with it. Then, I’ll speed each reading up until I feel like it’s close to a normal speaking speed.

Once I’m able to say each sentence, I’ll translate them to the best of my ability, and then compare my translation to the correct one. If they are different, I will find out why they’re different and what I did wrong.

When I have done this with every sentence, I will be able to use these with the audio I have, and then I’ll start language shadowing.”

Com podeu veure és molt més detallat i respon al perquè ho estem fent. Val la pena dedicar-hi 5-10 minuts a fer això ja que ens permetrà estudiar millor.
